I am writing to express my deep concern and reservations about recent incidents and the overall state of affairs at the almshouse where I reside. While I initially had reservations about attending a recent celebration that followed a poorly handled incident, I felt compelled to participate despite my misgivings.
During the event, I sat at a table with an almshouse community, including a trustee and a clergy member. It was disheartening to hear jovial suggestions about issuing red coats to residents and escorting them to daily church, reminiscent of a photograph from the past. This suggestion perpetuates the notion that residents are of a lower class, which is an inaccurate and disrespectful portrayal. The almshouse residents are a diverse group, some of whom possess impressive educational backgrounds and accomplishments. Treating them as anything less than deserving of respect is unacceptable.
My concern deepened considering the recent unjust eviction of an 83-year-old resident based on unverified letters. An inexperienced administrator's decision should have regarded the resident's circumstances and history. The decision stemmed solely from instances of intimidation and provocation, which should never serve as a basis for such serious actions. This behaviour contradicts the principles of fairness and justice guiding any community.
Furthermore, entrusting significant responsibilities to an administrator without the requisite experience is ill-advised. The administrator's background in the army does not necessarily provide the practical understanding needed for effective administration. It is imperative to recognize that administrators, including site and house supervisors, play crucial roles in maintaining the institution and ensuring the well-being of its residents.
For the past seven years, I have silently observed the ongoings within the almshouse, fearing potential repercussions for speaking out. However, witnessing the mistreatment and expulsion of a fellow resident has compelled me to raise my voice. The situation has reached a point where intervention is necessary to prevent further unjust action and alleviate unnecessary stress for all residents.
The current circumstances within the almshouse are unacceptable. A prevailing atmosphere of retaliation and anxiety cannot be ignored. The administration appears ill-equipped to address the complex challenges of today. A complete overhaul of the institution is needed to address these pressing concerns adequately.
I implore those responsible to take these matters seriously and consider the situation's urgency. The almshouse residents, including myself, deserve a community that respects their dignity, appreciates their diversity, and upholds principles of fairness and justice. Immediate steps should be taken to address these issues and work towards a better, more inclusive future for all residents.
